Food: Variety shortages meet palatable sushi
While the Sushi Platter, Spicy Lobster Miso Soup, and Stone Grilled Seafood are among Onyx's top dishes that exhibit freshness and culinary creativity, the restaurant also has its hiccups. Expectations teeter with a mix of delicious as well as banal, forgettable flavors which closely states the neutral nature of the taste profile. The limited variety available at the establishment is also disheartening, this combined with unnecessarily expensive, small portions doesn't exactly scream 'value for money'.
Very Creative
Inventive, multi-dimensional dishes that stimulate the educated palate uniquely.
Okay Taste
Mixed experiences with food, some delicious and noteworthy, others forgettable.
Bad Variety
Limited choices on the menu and everything is pretty basic overall.
Top 3 dishes at Onyx
- 1
Sushi Platter 🏆
Fresh, large cuts, very good serving size, and expert presentation.
- 2
Roasted Black Cod Toban-Yaki
Delicate sweetness; miso glaze makes the black cod flavorful and tender.
- 3
Spicy Lobster Miso Soup
Fragrant embrace, warming soul, with spicy and perfectly flavored ingredients.
Vibe: Unassuming ambiance with a shot of sake
The vibe at Onyx could be likened to an underwhelming rollercoaster ride - you're not exactly thrilled about the bumpy ambiance characterized by dim lighting and noise, but the exhilarating view and intimate patio work like very effective seatbelts. Plus, the extensive drinks collection does mitigate some of the pretentious vibe of the place.
Great For Dates
Intimate patio and romantic view highly praised for date nights.
Okay to Entertain
Live music at bar adds to fun evening, without impacting dining much.
Bad Ambiance
Complaints about dim lighting, noise, and perceived messiness affecting mood.
Perks: Ease of dining tainted by service
Onyx makes it easy to get to a table- between validated, free parking and a helpful reservation system, making it to the venue is worry-free. However, don't expect the same level of convenience once inside. The service leaves much to be desired and the lack of flexible choices for large groups weighs down on the overall hospitality experience of the place.
Easy To Reserve
Helpful reservationist allowed desired table arrangement; very positive experience.
Bad For Groups
Large groups restricted to set menu, lacking flexibility in choices.
